Life Hacks for Walking Your Dog

October 1, 2015
Regular walks are an essential part of good doggy care. Fido’s daily excursions help keep him physically fit, burn off extra energy. Walks also offer beneficial mental stimulation. Exploring new places, seeing new sights, and even sniffing grass can all be very interesting for our canine buddies! In this article, a Columbia, MD vet offers some suggestions to make walking your pup a little easier.

Catching A Runaway

There is no replacement for proper training: make sure to teach Fido to come when called. That said, our canine friends aren’t always perfect. If your dog gets away, don’t chase him. Instead, pique Fido’s curiosity. Lie down and pretend you are hurt. Your pup may come back to see if you are okay. You can also try running in the other direction to see if your canine buddy chases you. We recommend trying a few options in a large, fenced area, to see what works with your pooch. Give him treats when he returns to you to sweeten the deal.

Bust Fido’s Pulling Habit

Does your dog sometimes drag you along on the leash? The next time Fido pulls, reverse direction. Keep changing directions every time your pup yanks on the leash. It may take some time, but sooner or later your canine pal will get the hint.

Dedicated Jacket

Get a coat just to wear for walking your dog. Fill the pockets with plastic baggies to pick up after your furry pal. That way, instead of having to run around and grab bags before each walk, you can just refill your jacket pockets regularly. Keep a spare key and a few treats in the pocket as well.

Paw Care

Summer and winter can both wreak havoc on Fido’s furry feet. Use paw balm or wax to protect your furry pal’s delicate paw pads, and wipe down his feet after each walk. Keep these supplies next to the leash to remind yourself to see to your canine friend’s paws.

Teach Fido To Carry His Gear

Do you enjoy going hiking with your pup? If Fido is strong enough, he may be able to carry his own gear. Keep a doggy backpack prepped with baggies, a collapsible water dish, treats, and copies of his paperwork. Ask your vet for specific advice.
